Octagon Variable is a modern reimagining of the original Octagon wood type, first shown in George Nesbitt’s 1838 “First Premium Wood Types Cut by Machinery.” Designed by Edwin Allen, this version pushes the spatial illusions of the original, now as a variable font. It was collaboratively redrawn in 2022 with students from the Hochschule für Angewandte Wissenschaften Hamburg as part of a type design introduction class. The font blends history and innovation, offering dynamic possibilities for type design.
